Meet the team: Craig Hollywood

In our Meet the team series, we profile our Short Back & Sidewalks volunteers and talk to them about their experiences volunteering with us.

Hi team my name is Craig and I'm the Founder and CEO of Short Back & Sidewalks (SBSW).

SBSW is an Australian not-for-profit creating positive connections and improving self esteem for people experiencing homelessness and marginalisation, one free haircut at a time.

We believe in a world where no person should be denied the right to a good conversation and a haircut.

Having grown up with a family member who experienced their own battles, and knowing that despite their circumstances, they were a caring person who was greatly admired and who gave a huge amount of love, I wanted to start something that assisted the community in need whilst also breaking down the stigma often associated with members of the community experiencing homelessness or hardship.

In the beginning SBSW was set up to help members of the community experiencing homelessness, however our team has now extended to supporting youth at risk, women with lived experience of domestic violence and also remote communities in which a haircut isn't easily accessible.

Alongside meeting what would be thousands of new friends across Australia my favourite part is seeing how important a good conversation is to a person. I've learned it's much more than just a haircut, it's about being able to positively connect with another member of the community regardless of circumstance.

Happy National Volunteering Week!
